Planned Changes in the Healthcare System: More Choices and Simplified Procedures

The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced important changes at the government meeting on October 24 that will positively impact the healthcare sector and improve service availability for patients.

Freedom of Choice for Patients

In the Universal Health Care Program, patients will have the option to choose standard services or benefit from an enhanced service package on a co-payment basis. This means patients can receive full program funding while also paying for the enhanced service they select. The goal of this initiative is to meet the individual needs of patients and provide better services without requiring them to exit the program.

DRG System Reform and Service Simplification

The plan involves revising the Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) system and easing related regulations. These adjustments will enable patients to access services more flexibly and promptly, ensuring that clinic interests are better considered. This reform aims to enhance service accessibility and improve the overall quality and efficiency within the healthcare system.

Reduction of Service Reimbursement Terms for Clinics

An important update concerns clinics participating in healthcare programs; the National Health Agency will significantly shorten the reimbursement terms for service costs. This change aims to enhance the financial sustainability of clinics and strengthen the relationship between the health sector and government programs.

Benefits for Clinics Penalized During the COVID Pandemic

Clinics that were fined during the COVID pandemic will receive specific benefits. Clinics willing to pay 20% of their fine will be fully exempt from penalties. This initiative aims to enhance financial stability and support the uninterrupted continuation of their services.
The initiated changes will significantly enhance the efficiency of the healthcare sector, providing patients with more choices and convenience. These changes reaffirm that patient needs and quality care are a priority.
